Why being yourself is so important

One of the most crucial parts of living your best life is to be yourself. Browsing through various articles, videos, quotes and face to face conversations, people are always telling you to be your own kind of person. However, more and more people are falling into the trap of ‘feeling like they have to be like others or as good as others’, which to be honest is giving you a very unhealthy relationship with yourself. By allowing you to form freely,  it makes you more special and a true authentic individual.

For a large quantity of my life so far, I have been stuck in this trap. From a small child, I always felt like I had to be like others. I believed I was different in a bad way and needed to be as good as others. I spent years comparing myself to others and trying to be like them. I was so unhappy and I was forever chasing goals that wasn’t possible. It wasn’t until a year or two ago I slowly began to realise that it was unhealthy and not worth it. I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life aiming to be like people that I physically cant be like. I wanted to be happy in my own skin and be my own true self. I took small steps in trying to embrace myself as I am and express myself freely. I had to take a huge step out of my comfort zone and fear the rejection and exposure to get another step closer to true happiness and self love. I wouldn’t say I’m there yet but I am well on my way then a few years ago. The journey just continues and will extend to grow. If you are stuck in the trap I was, you can begin to fully embrace yourself and grow as a true unique individual too.

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Here is why it is necessary and how you can grow to be your own true self too:

Firstly, it gives you peace of mind. Being your own true self allows yourself to follow your own beliefs and values. Always following what someone else wants means you aren’t letting yourself chase your own goals and aspirations. Let alone not pleasing yourself and feeling very unsatisfied. Why would you want to follow what someone else wants when you can follow your own dreams, passions and goals that are real to you.

Secondly, it allows you to be creative and express yourself. Being creative enables you to find direction in your life. Without direction, life can sometimes seem meaningless so that is why it is so important to have routine and goals to achieve what you really aspire to do.

Furthermore, you will NEVER have to please others. Trying to be like others means you have to put on an act and feel awkward when doing this because it’s not natural. This is putting more stress on yourself which nobody needs. Who needs stress, when life is a stress in general.

And lastly, being a true individual means having the courage to show other people how different you are, which is what really cumulates respect. The biggest factor to being yourself is acceptance. Accept yourself as you are. Accept your personality traits. Accept what you love and what you don’t love and just embrace everything you have. What you have, nobody else has.
